Overview

AI has become very topical, particularly with programs now available in the public domain. It is important to understand its real potential to benefit mankind as well as the pitfalls and abuse. Can machines really think or just process vast amounts of data quickly? 

This hybrid event will explore some of the principles behind the technology in order to improve our understanding of its capabilities as well as potential copyright issues when accessing data.

Learning outcomes

  • Improved understanding of the impact of AI in the engineering world as well as in day-to-day life.
  • Help to realise opportunities for utilising AI professionally.
  • Become more aware of the risks and types of abuse likely to be encountered.

About the presenter

Dr Zena Assaad
Senior Lecturer, School of Engineering Australian Army Research Centre (AARC) Fellow

Dr Assaad studied a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and completed a PhD exploring decision making under uncertainty to support strategic air traffic flow management. Following her studies, she spent some time working in various organisations, working as a liaison officer, bridging the communication between civil and military airspace. Dr Assaad worked on Australia’s first satellite-based augmentation systems project. She also worked as a research specialist with Australia’s aviation regulatory body. She has been in her current role since 2020.
