Provide feedback on building engineer’s registration related policies in WA

The WA Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety – Building and Energy Division (Building and Energy) is seeking feedback on five policies to support the implementation of the Amendment Regulations for registration of building engineers in Western Australia.

Engineers Australia General Manager WA Susan Kreemer Pickford and Past WA President Brian Haggerty met with Building and Energy Executive Director Saj Abdoolakhan along with team members Elizabeth Bazen and Peter Stewart on 4 April 2023 to receive an update on the progress of building reforms in WA including registration of engineers.

We are continuing to work closely with government on the development of the scheme and associated documentation.

Engineers Australia would like to hear from members to inform our submission, particularly regarding the proposed continuing professional development (CPD) requirements and professional indemnity insurance provisions. Send your feedback to [email protected] by COB Tuesday 9 May.

Government is seeking comment on these five policies:

  • Assessment entity approval: how an organisation can be approved to assess engineers’ qualifications and experience for registration
  • Professional indemnity insurance requirements for registered engineering contractors
  • How engineering practitioners can meet the CPD requirements
  • The requirements for an industry based CPD scheme to be approved by the Building Commissioner
  • Code of conduct for building engineers.

Stakeholders may provide direct feedback on their content, completeness and clarity by Friday 19 May.

View the explanatory statement, which contains an outline of the supporting policies.

Decisions regarding engineers’ registration have already been made by government, so we are only providing feedback on the five supporting policies. You can read the Decision Regulatory Impact Statement: Registration of building engineers in Western Australia for further information on the progression of an engineering registration scheme in WA.
