Recognition for high achieving rail engineers

Engineers who are high achievers in Australia’s and New Zealand rail sector have been recognised in the 2023 Railway Technical Society of Australasia (RTSA) Awards.

The RTSA awards have been presented at the Conference on Rail Excellence in Melbourne.

Engineers Australia Chief Executive Officer, Romilly Madew AO said: “On behalf of the engineering profession, warm congratulations to all award-winners.

“Among many other things, the work that the winners have done has helped to increase efficiency and raise safety levels for those who rely on rail, including workers and passengers.”

The highest award – the 2023 RTSA Individual Award – has been won by Andrew Matthews.

This award celebrates his 40 outstanding years of engineering experience in the rail industry, both heavy and light rail.

Andrew’s achievements span a wide range of projects including the Melbourne Level Crossing Removals Program and Suburban Rail Loop, Sydney Light Rail, the Gold Coast Light Rail Extension Project and work overseas such as the Wellington Rapid Transit Program and the London Jubilee Line Extension.

Andrew is a proven subject matter expert who could be trusted to provide sound, well-developed and thoroughly analysed advice from concept transport planning and development to design and implementation.

In addition, he is credited with mentoring junior engineers and technicians and has presented papers at over 20 conferences. Andrew is highly respected by all his peers and is a well-deserved recipient of the 2023 RTSA Individual Award.
