A new generation of engineers talk building a sustainable world

In celebration of World Engineering Day, we reached out to four young Engineers Australia members to ask them about this year’s theme: engineering solutions for a sustainable world.

What excites you about engineering?

Kit Kirby: What excites me about engineering is its transformative potential. It’s not problem solving, it’s creating solutions that directly impact people’s lives. Being near the forefront of innovation, surrounded by breakthroughs, is inspiring for me and it’s where I want to be.

Parmis Hassani: I think it is exciting that there is no one answer for doing something. You can think of several different ways to design and solve a problem. Especially with advancements like 3D printing and artificial intelligence, the realm of possibilities expands, enabling greater creativity and efficacy in problem solving.

Sarbjeet Singh: I find it exciting that engineering challenges my curiosity and enables me to work on projects that can shape the world and leave a lasting impact. Working with the City of Greater Geelong, I feel grateful to be working on storm water studies and projects that can help us better prepare for the consequences of climate change.

Tully Mahr: I love the unique opportunity engineering presents to combine innovative and creative thinking with problem solving processes to generate a positive impact on society.

How can engineering change the world for the better?

Kit: Engineering has tackled humanity's most pressing challenges beautifully. From ancient aqueducts providing clean water, to modern clean power generation. While no solution is perfect, engineering has shaped progress. I'm passionate about contributing by developing materials that not only improve performance, but also promote sustainability and resilience in critical industries.

Parmis: Engineering has the power to change the world for the better by addressing real world challenges through innovation and solving problems with a team of like-minded people. Engineering has enabled a multitude of sustainable solutions to be developed such as efficient transportations or different ways to power our world. Ultimately engineering allows us to improve our quality of life, protect the environment and help promote social progress.

Sarbjeet: Engineering is constantly changing the world with inventions and solutions that benefit everyone. It also has the power to bring sustainable practices into action and build a climate-resilient future.

Tully: By incorporating diverse perspectives and knowledges into engineering practices, we can innovate solutions to genuinely improve the quality of life for present and future generations by leveraging advancements in technology and scientific principles.
