Fellow

Learn about the specific criteria for membership as a Fellow.

Membership as a Fellow is the highest level of membership with Engineers Australia. It carries with it a recognition of eminence within the engineering profession.

Fellow membership is open to fully qualified engineers with significant experience, achievement and prominence within the profession. In most cases, applicants will also have the Chartered credential with Engineers Australia.

Eligibility

You can join Engineers Australia as a Fellow if you meet specific criteria.

You must be practising in any one of the three engineering-specific occupational categories of professional engineer, engineering technologist or engineering associate and:

  • Be a Member or be qualified for membership of Engineers Australia and have a demonstrated commitment to the engineering profession. Such as through exemplary leadership or mentoring activities.

plus

  • Have had extensive responsibility in the design or execution of important engineering work and achieved exceptional eminence in the profession. You would have held a position with this level of responsibility for at least 15 years.

or

  • Hold a position with major ongoing responsibility, such as CEO or head of an engineering business unit. You’ll have held the position for at least five years and have responsibility for managing company operations, a multidisciplinary staff and large, complex engineering projects.

or

  • Have high-level education qualifications, hold a prominent position in the profession and have made a major contribution to the science or practice of engineering. For example, you have a PhD in an engineering discipline and hold a position as an associate professor or head of department in an academic institution.

How to apply and what you need to provide

To apply you must also have the support of two current Fellow members. If you don’t have two Engineers Australia Fellow members as support, you can nominate two current Fellow members from an engineering organisation with which we have a mutual recognition agreement.

If you live overseas or in a remote area and don’t have any Fellow member supporters, you can provide a statutory declaration with your application stating this. You should try to find support to the best of your ability as approvals are made on a case-by-case basis.

To apply, you’ll need to create an account in our member portal or login if you're already a member. You’ll also need the following documents:

  • primary piece of identification, such as a passport photo page, current driver licence or copy of your birth certificate
  • degree certificate (testamur) or previous assessment letter from Engineers Australia
  • academic transcript
  • current CV or resume that details your level of responsibility along with clear examples of the requirements
  • references from your supporters that explain how they believe you meet the criteria.

If you don’t need a competency assessment, you can complete the whole application online.

When a competency assessment is needed

You’ll need to complete a competency assessment if you have:

  1. Australian engineering qualifications that aren’t accredited or approved by Engineers Australia
  2. engineering qualifications from overseas which aren’t recognised by Engineers Australia or
  3. qualifications in fields related to engineering which aren’t recognised by Engineers Australia but you have post-graduate engineering qualifications and substantial engineering experience.

If you need a competency assessment, an assessor will contact you to explain the steps. If a competency assessment is needed, your application will take about four weeks to process. We'll then let you know the outcome.

How your application is considered

Your application for Fellow membership is considered by Engineers Australia’s National Membership Committee. The committee is comprised of engineering peers and volunteers who meet around twice a month to review and approve applications. The decision to admit someone to Fellow membership is at the discretion of the committee and is final.

If your application is approved, you’ll need to pay the fee before your membership can start.

Post-nominals

Your acceptance as a Fellow member means you’re recognised as a leader in the profession. Depending on your occupational category, you’ll also gain one of the following post-nominals:

  • Associate Fellow (AFIEAust)
  • Technologist Fellow (TFIEAust) or
  • Fellow (FIEAust).
