Overseas-born engineers make up over 58 per cent of Australia’s engineering workforce but are significantly more likely than their Australian-born counterparts to be unemployed. To find out why and identify how to overcome the barriers to employment these engineers face, Engineers Australia commissioned research to identify potential barriers to employment.

Engineers Australia appreciates the opportunity to provide feedback to the Australian Bureau of Statistics on the targeted update of ANZSCO proposed changes. This letter has been developed to assist the ABS with the update by providing comments specific to the areas being reviewed relevant to the engineering profession. 

This letter builds on our August 2020 submission to the Productivity Commission’s National Water Reform Issues Paper, and highlights areas of strength and weakness from the Draft relative to our previous submission.

Engineers Australia is a strong supporter of initiatives to reduce emissions, grow Australian industry, workforce and
strengthen our domestic fuel security. This submission provides general comments as well as specific answers to the questions posed under the priority initiatives.

The purpose of this document is to engage Engineers Australia members and the engineering-adjacent community in a discussion about what it will take to increase productivity in the infrastructure industry, and to determine how engineers can best contribute to meaningful evidence-based policy development.

There is no discrete definition of engineering or engineering capabilities in the Australian curriculum, unlike mathematics, science and technology. Rather, for foundation to year 10, engineering is addressed primarily across three learning areas: science, technologies and mathematics and through a specific focus on engineering principles and systems in the design and technologies strand within technologies learning area.

Engineers Australia would like to thank the Victorian Government for their leadership in advancing registration of engineers in Australia. Engineering is one of the few professions in Australia without a national approach to registration to ensure the qualifications and experience of all practitioners, both national and international, is at the appropriate level for the engineering service delivered.

This paper outlines the views of Engineers Australia concerning flooding and the improvement of the flood resilience of Queensland communities to flooding, in response to the Auditor General’s report Flood resilience of river catchments. 

Engineers Australia strongly believes that infrastructure is the essential enabler of productivity growth and it is essential to preserve and improve our standards of living. It should be fit for purpose and the flow of these services should stay ahead of population and economic growth.

Engineers Australia has long called for the establishment of an independent body to advise government on critical infrastructure objectives to support long-term social, economic and environmental outcomes for our great state.
