Engineers Australia argues that enhanced investment in economic infrastructure is long overdue and welcomes the opportunity to respond to the Australian Government’s discussion paper “Using value capture to help deliver major land transport infrastructure: roles for the Australian Government”.

Engineering is one of the few professions in Australia without a national approach to registration to ensure the qualifications and experience of all practitioners, both national and international, is at the appropriate level for the engineering service delivered.

Engineers Australia has long called for the establishment of an independent body to advise government on critical infrastructure objectives to support long-term social, economic and environmental outcomes for our great state.

Engineers Australia believes transport planning should be closely integrated with land use planning otherwise governments will be constantly in remedial mode, and there should be better separation between transport within population nodes (or centres) and between population centres.

Engineers Australia has examined the REF for the Proposed Newcastle Light Rail (NLR) and has concluded that the Proposal does not satisfy the key transport and urban design objectives for which it has been planned (the NTUPP), that it fails to deliver an integrated transport system and that alternatives are available which can meet these objectives and this integration.
